Donegal is found at the tip of Ireland, bordering Northern Ireland. It’s a county where Irish culture is still extremely prominent and well celebrated.
In the west of Donegal lies the town of Dungloe. It is known for its Mary from Dungloe International Festival which is held in late July every year. The festival features a week of music and celebrations as well as a pageant with competitors from around the world. Different areas and cities select a “Mary” to enter the competition, with hopefuls travelling from as far as New York and Melbourne.
Just beyond Dungloe is Cloughglass – a stunning village on the coast. The long stretch of beach is one of the most beautiful sights in Donegal. With multiple coves and bays, it’s the perfect location for some family fun. Cloughglass also has a claim to fame which may interest fans of Scottish football. Pundit and former Celtic goalkeeper Packie Bonner hails from the area and was discovered by Sean Fallon whilst playing for the local team, Keadue Rovers.

If you’re a fan of golf, Cruit Island Golf Club in Kincasslagh is a must. The course lies on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, offering wonderful views as you take on 9 challenging holes. There are also trips available from Cruit to nearby Owey Island. Its name comes from the Irish Gaelic uaigh meaning caves, and its breathtaking caverns are popular with kayakers in the summer – like those in this video.
Top Tips
