Eriskay, Scotland

Eilein na h-Òige. The Island of Youth.

The Isle of Eriskay lies at the bottom of the Western Isles. Despite having an area of just 2.7 square miles, it is an island packed with history, adventure and sights.

Eriskay’s greatest claim to fame is being the inspiration for Compton MacKenzie’s 1947 novel, Whisky Galore. The story is based on the real-life events which took place on Eriskay in 1941. The SS Politician cargo ship was carrying 30,000 cases of whisky when it ran aground just off the island. The book was adapted into a film in 1949, and a remake was released in 2016. The only pub on the island, Am Politican, is named after the ship.  At the pub you can find some memorabilia from the boat – including a bottle of the whisky.

Eriskay’s beaches can be mistaken for those in the Caribbean in good weather. White sand and crystal blue waters provide the perfect scene for a summer trip. When it’s sunny, its as good as anywhere!

The residents of Eriskay find ways to keep themselves occupied on such a small island. The island has its own football club and they play on a pitch which has been recognised by FIFA as one of the most remarkable places in the world to play football.

As it is situated between the Isles of South Uist and Barra, Eriskay is the perfect base for some island hopping. The Uists are rich with history and boast beautiful beaches, whilst Barra’s spectacular sights are just a short ferry journey away.

Top Tips

  • Pack for all weather. The sun could be be splitting the sky, or it could be pouring down. Either way, if you’re prepared you can still enjoy the island.
  • Embrace the seclusion. You really will be living the island life – which means very little phone signal or wifi.
  • Make friends with the locals, there’s a good chance you’ll run into them a few times!
